MOUNT EVEREST GAME RESERVE

Situated in the far eastern part of the Free State, Mount Everest Game Reserve has no less than three mountains within its boundaries, namely the Mooihoek, Everest and Glen Paul mountains. Four hiking trails meander around these mountains, taking hikers through changing landscapes of plains and indigenous forests with breathtaking scenery.

While hiking, visitors may chance upon one of the many game species in the reserve - blesbok, black wildebeest, white rhino, eland and gemsbok, and even exotic species such as fallow deer and camels. Boasting some 290 bird species, the reserve is popular among bird-watchers. The mountains are frequented by black eagles, while the local population of Cape vultures are regular visitors to the reserve's vulture restaurant.

Several dams are stocked with bass and trout, providing hours of entertainment to the keen fisherman, while horse-riding enthusiasts can explore the reserve on horseback.

Accommodation is offered in the form of two to six-bed log chalets (fully equipped), rondavels (fully equipped) and four "rustic rooms" in each farmhouse. There are also two caravan parks with full ablution facilities. The more adventurous at heart have the option of spending a night in the caves on the reserve. Only sleeping bags/stretchers are provided. Conference facilities, a curio shop and a fast-food outlet are available. The reserve is open throughout the year. Confirm opening times with the owner.

How to get there:
About 3km north of Harrismith on the N3 (Johannesburg/Durban), turn east onto the Verkykerskop road. Follow for 13km, then turn right. The reserve turnoff is a further 5km on the right.
